What made our grandmothers’ walls so white?

Vienna white is the raw material of traditional lime painting: soft limestone from the Zebegény quarry, ground flour-fine. Mixed with water it dissolves into a paste immediately and gives a wall paint with good covering and adhesive power; thanks to its high coverage and binding strength the surface stays durable. It can be mixed with any pigment, used as a filler in wall paints and as a glazing agent in oil paints.

Lime painting is not nostalgia. It has returned to renovation work over the past decades — especially on old houses with adobe and brick walls — precisely because it is vapour-permeable and does not seal off the moisture movement of the wall the way a film of dispersion paint does. This material always did that; today that is exactly what is asked of it again.

Properties

  • good adhesion on plaster, brick and adobe walls
  • high coverage, fast setting
  • vapour-permeable, does not seal the moisture movement of the wall
  • an alkaline binder compatible with every pigment
  • 100% natural, Hungarian product — free of chemical additives

Also suitable for making glue-bound paints and knife fillers (mountain chalk).

The actual mixing ratio, the number of coats needed and the surface preparation all depend on the condition of the wall in question — we are glad to help you work out the quantity.
